• The NSW State election is on Saturday, 25 March 2023. Remember to check your enrolment details and to vote.

• Voting is compulsory.

• If you can't make it to a voting centre on election day, you may be eligible to vote early in-person at an early voting centre or vote by post.

New South Wales is divided into 93 state electoral districts, also called electorates. At a state election, voters in each district elect a member to represent them in the Legislative Assembly. This is also called the Lower House. Voters also elect half of the 42-member Legislative Council for an eight-year term. This is also called the Upper House.

Some of the electoral districts in New South Wales have changed. Electoral district boundaries change to maintain an approximately equal number of voters across districts as the population changes and people move into and out of New South Wales.

This process is called redistribution and is in effect for the 2023 NSW State election. This could mean that the district you are enrolled to vote in has changed, even if your address has not.

Please be aware that if you live in a newly developed suburb or subdivision, the Find my electorate tool may not contain your address. If this affects you, please phone us for assistance on 1300 135 736.

We offer opportunities to work at the 2023 NSW State election. Work is available on election day and throughout the election period. This includes the weeks before and after election day. Applications are encouraged from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disability and people who speak a language other than English.

Voting at the 2023 NSW State election

The New South Wales State election will be held on Saturday, March 25. Voting is compulsory. Watch this video to understand how to enrol to vote, check your enrollment or update your details; and what your voting options are.

New South Wales is divided into 93 state electoral districts, also called Electorates. At a state election, voters in each district elect a member to represent them in the Legislative Assembly. This is also called the Lower House. Voters also elect half of the 42 member Legislative Council for an eight-year term. This is also called the Upper House.

Enrolling to vote

You must enrol to vote if you're 18 years old and over,and an Australian citizen. The NSW electoral role is jointly managed by the NSW Electoral Commission and the Australian Electoral Commission.

You can enrol to vote, check your enrollment details and update your information online by visiting aec.gov.au/enrol

Voting options

For these elections, you can vote: in person on election day; or in person before election day at an early voting centre if you're eligible; or by postal vote, if you're eligible. If you are blind or have low vision, you can vote using operator assisted telephone voting.

Election day

To vote on election day, Saturday, March 25, visit a voting centre between 8am and 6pm.

Early voting

If you are eligible to vote in person before election day, you can visit an early voting centre on Saturday, March 18, or from Monday, March 20 to Friday, March 24. To find out where you can vote on or before election day, visit our website. In the find my electorate tool, enter the address of where you were enrolled to vote to find a list of voting centres and information about each venue's opening hours and accessibility.

Postal vote

You may be eligible to vote by post and have your ballot papers mailed to you. Check your eligibility at elections.nsw.gov.au

Then apply online or over the phone by calling 1300 135 736. You can also apply by downloading the application form on the website and sending your completed form back to the NSW Electoral Commission.

Postal vote applications open Monday, January 16, and close at 6pm, Monday, March 20. Postal packs containing the ballot papers will be sent out from the week starting Monday, March 13.

When you receive your postal pack, read the instructions carefully. For your vote to be counted, you must complete your ballot papers and postal vote certificate by 6pm on election day. Your completed postal vote must be received by the NSW Electoral Commission by 6pm on Thursday, April 6.

Completing your ballot papers

When it comes time to vote, you'll be given two ballot papers to complete. One ballot paper is for the Legislative Assembly. This is the smaller ballot paper. The larger ballot paper is for the Legislative Council. If you need assistance completing your ballot papers, you can ask an election official if you are voting in person at a voting centre, or take a friend, family member or carer with you.

Your vote is secret, but if you need help, it's okay to take someone to the voting screen with you. Similarly, you can ask a friend, family member or carer for help if you are completing a postal vote ballot paper and postal vote certificate.

Council for Intellectual Disability – your right to vote

On Saturday the 25th of March 2023 there is a New South Wales state election. This is when you get to decide who represents you in the New South Wales Parliament. You are voting for people to make decisions about state-wide issues like housing and hospitals education roads and railways. This means you get to have a chance to have your say on which issues are important to you.

In Australia, everybody has to vote but more importantly everybody has the right to vote. Even if you have an intellectual disability just like me. My intellectual disability does not stop me from having my say and it shouldn't stop you either.

Voting might seem a little bit hard, confusing or a little bit scary but I am going to show you a few easy ways to help you to vote.

Enrolling

If you want to vote you have to be 18 years and over and an Australian citizen. You also need to enrol.

Enrolling to vote is easy. You can enrol online or fill out an enrolment form. If you need help you can ask a family member a friend or a support worker.

Voting options: Postal voting

If it is hard for you to get to a voting centre on Election Day, you can do a postal vote. You have to apply for a postal vote online or send an application in the mail. The website you go to is elections.nsw.gov.au.

After you have done this you will be sent your postal ballot papers. Once you have filled them out you need to send them back before the due date. You will need a witness to sign.

Early voting

If you can't vote on the day that's okay, you can go to an early voting centre in your local area. Early voting is open for one week before election day. There are early voting centers in most areas. You can find out where they are on the website or on the phone.

So, what if you decide you want to be part of all the fun on Election Day? Yay!

“Sarah shall we look up your address and find out where you can vote?”.

On the website type in your address and you'll see a list of places you can go.

“It looks like you can vote at the school down the road. Do you want to go there on the day?”

“Yes.”

You can vote between 8am in the morning and 6pm at night. At the voting centre you may have to wait in line to have your vote.

“Please proceed to vote.”

When it's your turn give your name and address to the friendly staff.

“Hey what's your name?”

“Sarah Smith.”

“Sarah Smith, have you voted before Sarah?

“No.”

Now they will mark your name off the roll. They will give you two ballot papers to vote wit. There is a big ballot paper. that's for the upper house it's known as the legislative Council. And there is a small ballot paper for the lower house; it's known as the legislative assembly.

It is important to read the instructions on the ballot papers to understand how to fill in your ballot papers correctly.

“Excuse me can you please help?”

But if you need help, ask the friendly staff in blue vests.

“Yes so you have two options to vote either above the line or below the line…”

Your vote is private and you don't have to tell anyone who you're voting for.

Once you've voted fold the ballot papers and put them in the ballot box.

So guess what? You've just heard your sayon who is going to make decisions for New South Wales. Isn't that fantastic?

• select a location on the map to view the venue name, accessibility features, opening hours and to get directions.

You can also call the elector enquiry centre on 1300 135 736.

If you need help accessing a voting centre or casting your vote, you can ask election staff or you can bring a friend or family member or your support worker.

There is also maxi pens and magnifying sheets available at voting centres.

People with disability are also eligible to use early voting options, including voting early at an early voting centre and postal voting. People who are blind or have low vision can vote by telephone.
