If an election has been deferred, no voting will take place until the election is rescheduled.

Councils have the option to choose the NSWEC or a commercial election service provider to conduct the election for them. Where an election is not run by the Commission, the council should be contacted for election information.

A poll gauges the opinion of electors and help guide the council in its decisions. For a council poll to pass, a majority of voters must have voted in support of the proposal. The result is not binding.

A referendum is required to change the constitutional structure of the council. For a referendum to pass, a majority of voters in the council area must vote in support of the relevant proposal. The result is binding.

An election is uncontested when the number of candidates who have nominated is equal to or less than the number to be elected.

The elected councillors are either suspended or terminated and a government-appointed administrator temporarily takes over the council’s operations.
