Pre-Poll Voting

You can vote before election day as a pre-poll voter if you:

  • will not be in New south Wales during polling hours (8 am to 6 pm) on election day
  • will not be within eight kilometres of any polling place open on election day during polling hours (8 am to 6 pm)
  • will be travelling under conditions which will prevent you from voting at any polling place during polling hours (8 am to 6 pm) on election day
  • are a member of a religious order or have religious beliefs which prevent you from attending a polling place or voting during polling hours (8 am to 6 pm) on election day
  • are caring for a person, not in hospital, who is sick, infirm or approaching maternity and cannot travel to a polling place
  • will be working during polling hours (8 am to 6 pm) on election day and will not be able to attend at a polling place to vote
  • are a silent elector.

Pre-poll voting is available at the office of any returning officer during office hours from the close of nominations for the election until 6 pm on the Friday before election day.

Other pre-poll voting centres including the Sydney Airport will be provided depending on the nature of the election. Details will be published on this website at the time of an election.

 To vote pre-poll you make an oral declaration that you are eligible. You will be issued with the ballot papers which must be completed in the office and returned folded to the person who issued them to you. The ballot papers are enclosed in a declaration envelope which you must sign. This declaration envelope is sealed and kept in a secure ballot box until after the close of poll on election day. All pre-poll votes are opened together and counted as soon as possible after election day.
