Could you help run the Bega by-election?
21 September 2009
The NSW Electoral Commission is on the lookout for a Returning Officer to lead theBega Valley Shire by-election on December 5.
NSW Electoral Commissioner Colin Barry said the six-week job needs someone who can lead a team, is well organised and can work confidently in a busy period.
“Returning Officers are first and foremost great people managers who also possess excellent administrative skills,” Mr Barry said.
“I’d encourage Bega Valley Shire residents who like a challenge to apply for the position.
You will receive on the job training and be supported throughout the election by an experienced officer from the Electoral Commission.
“Our Returning Officers pride themselves on running the event smoothly and helping candidates and voters alike.
“When the person starts on 26 October they’ll be straight into managing candidate nominations and organising polling places.
“People from all backgrounds should consider applying - our current group of Returning Officers includes local mums, retirees, professionals and farmers.
Many like the role because it’s a short-term challenge that pays well and gives them a chance to contribute to their community.”
While it is regarded as a part-time role, there will be demanding periods, especially in the lead-up to, and the days after, polling day.
Applications for the position close on 9 October. Interested people can apply by sending a brief resume to linda.scorah@elections.nsw.gov.au or by contacting her on 9290 5926.
The Bega Valley Shire by-election will be held on December 5. Voting is compulsory for all residents aged over 18 on the electoral roll. Enrolment forms can be picked up at local Australia Post offices.
